Project

About Mpigi District where the project is located.

According to the recent statistics, the highest number of students stop at S.4 level. After S.4 many drop out of school and get into early marriages while others start a living with any available employment opportunities in the area.

The recent Statistics for example indicate that Children aged 20 and above whose highest level of education completed is “A” level (S.6) was 3,089(3.1%) of the many who started Secondary School.

In the biggest part of Uganda, more than 55% of students who finish high school (S.4 and S.6) cannot proceed to higher institutions of learning due to poverty in the rural regions.

This has promoted early marriages, continued immorality, increased drug abuse among the youths and high crime rate. In addition, Mpigi District, though has got a few higher institutions of learning, it lacks a Nursing school. Most Nursing schools in the country are too expensive for many Ugandans.

The conditions of the Village where the school is constructed.

Extreme poverty is true description. A rural based area where the local people are financially marginalized. Poverty in this area is caused by relying much on subsistence farming that is producing food crops only for home consumption.

The consequence of poverty on this village is the inability to afford education for their children. They can’t also afford urban – based institutions for their children’s education and empowerment. Therefore, the local community through Fr. Deogratias Kateregga resolved to start a Rural – based Nursing and Midwifery school to solve the problem of local population’s inability to afford education in urban – oriented nursing institutions so that children both girls and boys from poor families get an opportunity for modern education towards self –reliance and also reduce on the health outbreaks in this region through availing personnel.

Another challenge in Kitojjo village and Mpigi district is that many pregnant mothers die in the villages due to lack of nurses and midwives who can give them First Aid and Maternity care services before referral to bigger hospitals for better management.

Diseases mostly HIV/AIDS – which has claimed many of people’s lives leading to the problem of child–headed families and AIDS – orphans. Many of the beneficiaries of this Nursing and Midwifery school are AIDS–orphans.
